Historic storm glass
The storm glass or''Goethe barometer" is regarded as the oldest
barometer in the world.
Although J.W.von Goethe (1742-1832) is sometimes credited with
its invention because one was found in his bedroom after his death
there is evidence that similar instruments were use by the Moors
during the 8th century.
Also called "Thunder Glasses" historians believe the Pilgrim Fathers
sailed to America using this rudimentary barometer.
Each storm glass is hand blown, and forecast changes in whether
hours in advance.
The storm glass is half filled with coloured water so that the inlet
hole is completely covered.
The changes due to the pressure of the "weight"of the atmosphere
will be seen in the spout (the air pressure in the main vessel stays
constant beeing trapped after it has been filled with water.
The instrument is sensitive enough to display changes in air presure
in a three story house basement versus attic.
High water level in spout bad whether, low water level fair whether
